After teaching Tajweed for years, you notice the same mistakes appear over and over. The good news: most of them can be fixed in a single focused week with the right drills.
Mistake 1: Weak Makharij (articulation points)
Letters like ع, ح, ق, ط, ض are often pronounced from the wrong place. Practice each letter slowly in front of a mirror with your teacher — feel where the air stops.
Mistake 2: Inconsistent Madd lengths
Many students rush Madd letters or stretch them too long. Tap a steady count of 2, 4 or 6 with your finger as you recite.
Mistake 3: Missing the Ghunnah
Ghunnah is the nasal sound on ن and م with shaddah. Hold it for 2 counts — do not swallow it.
Mistake 4: No bounce on Qalqalah letters
ق ط ب ج د bounce when sakin. Practice with single words like 'أَحَدْ' until the bounce becomes automatic.
Mistake 5: Confusing heavy and light letters
Heavy letters (ص ض ط ظ غ خ ق) fill the mouth. Light letters are flat. Record yourself and compare to a Qari.
Mistake 6: Stopping in wrong places
Stopping mid-ayah can change the meaning. Learn the waqf signs and ask your teacher to mark safe stop points in your Mushaf.
Mistake 7: Reading too fast
Slow tarteel beats fast hadr every time. If your teacher cannot follow along, you are reading too fast.
